Resilient operations by design

Efficiency and resilience are often framed as a trade-off. The best-run organisations design for both.

For decades, operational excellence meant removing slack: lean inventories, single sources, tightly optimised processes. Recent years have shown the cost of that approach when the unexpected happens — and the unexpected now happens often.

Beyond the efficiency–resilience trade-off

Resilience does not have to mean waste. It means knowing where flexibility matters most and building it there deliberately. Organisations that do this well share three habits.

  • They see end to end. They map critical processes and dependencies across functions, suppliers and systems, so that weak points are visible before they break.
  • They decide faster. Clear escalation paths, real-time operational data and pre-agreed playbooks shorten the time between a signal and a response.
  • They practise. Crisis simulations and scenario exercises turn plans into reflexes.

Resilience is not a reserve you hold. It is a capability you exercise.

The role of digital

Digital tools make resilience affordable: control towers that combine data across the supply chain, automation that absorbs peaks without overtime, and analytics that detect early warning signals. But tools only help if the operating model can act on what they reveal.

Designing for resilience is ultimately a leadership choice — to value the ability to adapt as highly as the ability to optimise.

Clarity for what comes next.
